If there’s one thing I hate in the world of sports, it’s speculation. The-Reggie-Bush-ruled-ineligible-stripping-of-Heisman-Trophy-saga went even deeper today when Yahoo! Sports released a report that Reggie Bush would be stripped of his Heisman trophy. At least, that’s what the headline would lead you to believe.
While that may be a possibility, and even a probability, it’s mere speculation. All of this stemming from Reggie’s acceptance a few gifts in 2005 (more so his parents accepting the goods) while an NCAA athlete, making him ineligible and thus, as if he never stepped on the field that season.
The Heisman Trust, has met and is continuing to meet on this issue while everyone continues to chime in. You’d be hard pressed to find a majority of Heisman winners who think Bush should be stripped of his trophy, because the trophy was awarded for his play on the field; however, because the NCAA bylaws are part of the pimping of the Heisman trophy (as well as thousands of young athletes), it is as if Reggie Bush never stepped on the field that season. That’s like telling a jury to strike a supremely evidential remark from the record. Because I remember Bush in 2005, and he was freakin’ awesome.
I can’t even get started on the NCAA. I hate them more than Marxist communism. That’s not an exaggeration. I loathe this organization. I think it’s sick how a group of old farts and universities (aka, institutions of academia) can get rich off of ridiculously talented young people in the name of college athletics. They get to go to school for free…I can hear your argument. Sorry. We’re in America. Athletes are the kings among men.
With Bush and the Heisman, I wish the Heisman Trust would consider the past the past. Let the guy keep his award. Sure, I’m biased. I’m a fan. If O.J. Simpson still has his trophy, it makes me nauseous to think that Reggie can’t have his.
If they do decide to strip him of the trophy, I’m 100 percent sure Reggie will relinquish the bronze stiff-arm. Though if I were him, I’d simply tell them: “You have to catch me first…”
