We’ll have a full write-up of everything that’s announced at today’s Apple event as soon as the conference is finished. For those of you who just can’t wait, we’ll be live-blogging the major announcements as they happen. You can see everything below. Hit F5 to refresh your page.
Here we go…
2:15 p.m. EST – That’s all she wrote, folks. Some big announcements, but nothing earth-shattering. Apple TV looks like the most exciting of them. For that price, I could see it being a big, big success. If any company can turn around the failure of Apple TV version 1, it’s Jobs & Co.
2:14 p.m. EST – Martin: “I don’t have any products to reveal”.
2:13 p.m. EST - Correction: it’s just Chris Martin. Not the rest of the band.
2:12 p.m. EST – It’s Coldplay. That’s a pretty big name for a press conference.
2:11 p.m. EST – Sounds like it’s time for closing thoughts. Steve is musing about why Apple started getting involved with music. Seems like we’re about to get a live performance.
2:08 p.m. EST – The original Apple TV was $229, which Steve admits was too high. The new one will be $99. Wow. It will be available “later this month”.
2:07 p.m. EST – You’ll be able to stream video from iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch) to an Apple TV via AirPlay. You could watch half of a movie on the train ride home and then finish it on your TV when you get home. You can take photos on your iPhone and easily view them on a TV.
2:02 p.m. EST – No mention of apps for Apple TV yet. A lot of people will be disappointed if there is no app support.
1:59 p.m. EST – Netflix streaming will be available on Apple TV. Unlimited movie streaming for Netflix subscribers.
1:58 p.m. EST - It’s worth noting that CBS and NBC aren’t on board with this. Steve says he thinks they will be on board soon.
1:57 p.m. EST – The rumors were right. High definition (and commercial-free) ABC and FOX shows will be available to rent for 99 cents. Movies will be $4.99 and will be available to rent on the day they come out on DVD.
1:56 p.m. EST – No longer do you buy TV shows and movies. Now you rent them. This means that storage won’t be an issue. Watching something again in the future will be, though…
1:55 p.m. EST - We finally see the second generation of Apple TV. It’s much, much smaller than the previous version. Only 1/4 as big, actually. It fits in your hand easily (not that you would want to carry it around). It has HDMI, optical audio, Ethernet and also WiFI capability.
1:54 p.m. EST - Jobs claims that people don’t want a computer on their TV. That’s a debatable claim, but he’s probably right. At least for the average consumer. Thinking about storage space is too much for moms and dads. Sounds like he’s building toward talk of steaming, or at least temporary downloads.
1:52 p.m. EST - Time to talk about Apple TV. Jobs admits it hasn’t been a big success. “We’ve sold a lot of them, but it’s never been a huge hit.”
1:52 p.m. EST - Jobs: “We’ve got one more thing. Actually, it’s one more hobby”. Applause.
1:51 p.m. EST – iTunes 10 is available today. For free, of course.
1:50 p.m. EST - Ping won’t just be for computers, it will also be available on iPods and iPhones.
1:46 p.m. EST – Demo of Ping. Yawn.
1:45 p.m. EST – Steve is explaining the concept of “following” someone like it’s some great new idea. Uh, Steve… Twitter has been around for several years.
1:42 p.m. EST – Sounds like the iTunes store will be getting a long, long, long-needed update. The goal will be to make it easier to find things. It also sounds like Apple will be adding a social element that will allow you to tell your friends what you’re listening to. Jobs: “It’s like Twitter and Facebook meet iTunes”. It will be called Ping.
1:40 p.m. EST - Apple is launching iTunes 10. Steve shows the classic logo. It replaces the old version with a CD in it, but looks pretty similar. Not many people will even notice the change.
1:39 p.m. EST – Sounds like we could be in for a minor surprise here. Possibly some new features in iTunes. Steve is talking about the millions of downloads.
1:36 p.m. EST – Time to watch some new Apple commercials. The crowd actually cheers for this.
1:35 p.m. EST – The three new iPods will go on sale next week. They are available for pre-order today.
1:35 p.m. EST – The iPod Touch’s prices will be 8GB for $229, 32GB for $299 and 64GB for $399.
1:33 p.m. EST - The new iPod Touch will have the Retina Display introduced with the iPhone 4. It will also have a front-facing camera for FaceTime (also introduced with the iPhone 4) and a rear-facing camera for HD video recording (also in the iPhone 4). Lastly, it will have a 3-axis gyro and iOS 4.1 (again, iPhone 4).
1:32 p.m. EST – The iPod Touch is the #1 portable game player in the world. It outsells Sony’s PSP and Nintendo’s DS combined. Over 1.5 billion game and entertainment games and entertainment apps have been downloaded to the iPod Touch (that’s not even counting the iPhone).
1:31 p.m. EST - Now it’s time for the iPod Touch, the “most popular iPod.”
1:31 p.m. EST - The new Nano will sell for $149 in 8GB and $179 in the 16GB.
1:30 p.m. EST – Whoops. Steve, possibly jumping the gun, accidentally calls the Nano the “iPod Touch”.
1:27 p.m. EST – Steve demonstrates how to use the new iPod Nano. It works much the same way as an iPod Touch or iPhone, only without many of the apps.
1:25 p.m. EST – The new iPod Nano has a multi-touch screen. Applause from the crowd. It looks quite a bit smaller than the previous Nano.
1:25 p.m. EST – Jobs: “We’d like to make it smaller. We’d like to make it better.”
1:24 p.m. EST – Now it’s time for the iPod Nano.
1:23 p.m. EST - The coolest thing about the new Shuffle might be the packaging it comes in. It will sell for $49.
1:22 p.m. EST - First up is the iPod Shuffle. The new iPod Shuffle sees the return of buttons (last seen in the 2nd generation version), but it also keeps the voiceover and playlist functions of the most recent (3rd generation) version. Nothing groundbreaking here.
1:22 p.m. EST – All new designs for every model of iPod!
1:21 p.m. EST – Next up is what Steve calls “the entree”. The iPod. Steve announces that Apple has sold 275 million iPods. Big applause.
1:20 p.m. EST – iOS 4.2 comes out in November.
1:17 p.m. EST - AirPlay is the new name for AirTunes, a way to stream music over your home network. It will now include movies and photos.
1:16 p.m. EST – Time for a sneak peak at iOS 4.2. Jobs: “It’s all about iPad.” It will include multitasking, wireless printing (applause from the audience) and something new called “AirPlay”.
1:15 p.m. EST - Game Center comes out for free next week on iTunes.
1:14 p.m. EST - The two guys who are demonstrating the game are huge nerds. The game looks cool but it’s nothing groundbreaking. It will be out in December on all iOS devices (iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch).
1:13 p.m. EST – The new game is codenamed “Project Sword”. It looks pretty impressive.
1:11 p.m. EST - Game Center is an app for multiplayer games. You can play against friends or get matched with random other gamers. Steve invites the president of Epic Games onstage to show off a new game.
1:09 p.m. EST – HDR photos are actually 3 photos taken in rapid succession, with one intentionally under-exposed and one over-exposed. Then the three photos are combined by an algorithm. The result is better looking photos.
1:08 p.m. EST – Today, Apple is launching iOS 4.1. The update included some bug fixes, something called “high dynamic range photos”, TV show rentals and a game center.
1:07 p.m. EST – 6.5 billion apps have been downloaded.
1:06 p.m. EST – Now it’s time to talk about iOS. 120 million iOS devices (iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch) have been sold since the iPhone was launched.
1:05 p.m. EST – Steve boasts that, some days, over 1 million people shot at an Apple retail store.
1:02 p.m. EST – Steve starts by talking about some Apple retail stores. The Paris store is featured. Next up is the new retail store in Shanghai. Then London.
1:01 p.m. EST – Steve’s trademark turtleneck is looking a bit more like a normal shirt today.
1:00 p.m. EST – We’re getting started right on time. Steve Jobs is on stage! Huge applause.
12:55 p.m. EST – We’re 5 minutes away from the start. That’s assuming everything is on time, of course.
