Lorne Michaels has brought in fresh blood to try to revitalize a flagging franchise.
Saturday Night Live used to be the place where people tuned in for hilarious comedy – they would actually not go out, stay in, and watch Saturday Night Live. They’d eschew their crazy weekend parties to watch John Belushi dress up like a bee, and Gilda Radner overpronounce her words. Nowadays, people just wait for the internet to release whatever good sketches come down the pipeline, which is usually limited to the 2-3 minute digital internet shorts or whatever Andy Samberg is doing – or Bill Hader. I’m not insinuating SNL is a terrible show, but right now, I’ve laughed more watching Two and a Half Men. Granted, it’s really amazingly easy to laugh at the theme song when you’re high.
Three new cast members have been announced to join the bottomless cesspool in the 30 Rockefeller building in New York. The good news? They’re all from Chicago. The bad news? Most of the stuff they’ve been in online has been incredibly in line with the material being pumped out of New York – less funny than a funeral. At least at some funerals, they let you get drunk and yell things.
Taran Killam, Paul Brittain, and Vanessa Bayer, can you turn things around?
Godspeed.
