James Toney took on Randy Couture in the octagon, in a fight that many people dubbed boxing vs. MMA.
Dana White, president of the UFC has often said that boxing was “your grandfather’s sport” and that mixed martial arts was the fighting sport of the future – was this his moment to prove it?
Watch as Randy Couture discusses his win over James Toney:
With zero experience in the cage, the former middleweight and super middleweight boxing champion was defeated by submission after just 3 minutes and 19 seconds. Randy took down James in the first 20 seconds of the fight, before the boxer could even throw a punch. With just a few months of training, he was hardly a match for Couture on the ground.
After the fight Couture admitted that in a rare occurrence, everything went according to plan in the octagon.
“You don’t see too many guys shoot a low single in mixed martial arts. I knew the low single would work, would make it difficult for [James Toney] to counter and catch me coming in,” Randy said. And it was.
When asked whether or not Randy would take on James in the boxing ring, he said, “I would respectfully decline such an offer. It would be just as silly as I think it is for James to fight in mixed martial arts.”

Great win for Randy but he really has to stop taking these side show fights. It’s sad to see a legend of the sport reduced to fight in these clown like matches.
He should leave on a high note, maybe focus on running his business, and commentating on fights. He’s a great speaker who has invaluable insight into the sport of MMA. This way he can leave on a respectable note.
Ilove randy he is a beast go randy tonney never had a chance for real….
