Barclays Golf Tournament – 2010

By James Sheldon on August 26th, 2010

What a strange tournament the Barclays has been already!? Jim Furyk was DQ’d for being late for the Pro-Am event early in the week, and that set off a fartstorm of displeasure among his peers and fans. Yeah, it would be cool if DQ stood for Dairy Queen, but in this case, it stands for disqualified. According to PGA officials, rules are rules. Dustin Johnson is quite familiar with that rigidity–even when rules come with variables from course to course and from tourney to tourney.

It got even more interesting today when the newly single Tiger Woods took to the first tee, and put on a show, finishing the day at -6, 65. Yeah, he’s in the lead. He looked absurdly focused, and I’m sure that he’s well aware that he needs to keep some bank rollin’ to fulfill the obligations of his divorce settlement. A settlement that has remained undisclosed since the finalization of his divorce on Monday.

The tournament conditions have been perfect for prime scores in the morning, and Woods looked great in play, and somehow looked like hell in appearance. The poor guy just looks exhausted–understandably. Regardless, he hit well over 70 percent in driving accuracy, and as was obvious in the PGA Championship, his pace on the greens were right on–his lines were just off. Not today.

Perhaps he’s on auto-pilot, perhaps he’s playing with motivation to avoid elimination from the FedEx Cup Playoffs, but the dude was incredibly candid in interviews on Wednesday. While other tournaments this year may have seemed like appearances for Tiger, he has clearly come to Paramus, New Jersey’s Ridgewood Country Club to win.

The Barclays continues through the 29th, and CBS will pick up coverage of the event this weekend. For quick updates, and enjoyable opportunities of procrastination at work, the PGA site offers the goods.
