“Angry Birds” are a kind of a big deal, and they’re flocking to Hollywood.
Rovio, the creator of the popular game for the iPhone and iPad are looking to turn their application into a major franchise, which would include TV shows, movies, toys and comic books.
In the Angry Birds game, players use a slingshot to help a flock of animated birds destroy a group of evil pigs who stole their eggs.
Alright, so it’s maybe not the best idea to hit Hollywood, but movies have been made that were much worse. And actually Angry Birds stats are pretty impressive.
“The game, which sells for 99 cents in the US and about $1.14 in other markets, hit the 6.5 million sales mark this month. A more limited free version has been downloaded 11 million times. An iPad version, for $4.99, has racked up 200,000 sales,” Variety Magazine writes. Overall the application dominates Apple’s paid app market in approximately 60 countries.
Still, Rovio admits that their biggest challenge is to ensure the brand is still relevant when a movie comes out- knowing that producing a film could take about three years before it is released to audiences.
Until a deal is made official, Rovio plans to continue on producing sequels and other versions of the Angry Birds game, that will “expand the universe and the brand.” Their first step includes launching versions for phones with Google Android software, and smart phones, in the coming months, to get their game in front of as many people as possible.
Ideally, Rovio will also be able to extend their application to video game systems like, Nintendo DS, Sony’s PSP Go and consoles like the Playstation 3.
“There will be a huge concentration of games coming to smart phones. We hope we can be the first major franchise to come from mobile,” Rovio CEO, Mikael Hed said.
