Cee-Lo Green’s New Single Is A Smash

By Mark Lorenz on August 20th, 2010

Cee-Lo Green is one of the most underrated musicians in the business, putting his stamp on everything from TLC to Goodie Mob to Ludacris songs, and somehow is still not a household name.

Cee-Lo Green’s voice is so smooth, they spray it on lakes in the winter so people can ice-skate. He’s so funky that every time he nods at you, somewhere in the universe, a whammy pedal is born. He’s so versatile that TLC wanted him to burn down other people’s houses for them – using just his vibrato. He’s part of the funkiest outfit of the century, Gnarls Barkley, and now he’s releasing a solo album – called Lady Killer. Supposedly, there are pictures circulating of his penis in the hands of Paris Hilton, who immediately lost all of her funk, because Cee-Lo stole it.

And the lead-off single is a doozy, a summer-wrapping anthem called endearingly, ‘Fuck You’. Cee-Lo complains about the fact that he’s been done wrong by a woman to a backing instrumental that wouldn’t be out of place in any other decade. If the rest of the album is as up to par, it’d make him, along with Sharon Jones and Raphael Saddiq, one of the most versatile and timeless contemporary musicians.

But for now, just enjoy the cursing.

Cee-Lo. The definitive collaboration with Goodie Mob, Outkast, Erykah Badu...the entire Dungeon Family...on "Liberation" from Outkast's Aquemini - I haven't purchased music in a long time, but I'm suddenly tempted.
