Trouble in paradise? Already?
I’m one of those people who said that Brett Favre would definitely come back–that his love for the game, and desire to play would trump all issues with his ankle, the mental grind or even coach Brad Childress.
According to Yahoo! Sports more than one player has expressed doubts about coach Chilly’s football savvy–especially on the offensive side of the ball. One player went on to say that Brett [Favre] doesn’t think that coach Childress knows anything about offense and that Brett doesn’t trust him. Perhaps an insult to a career offensive coordinator, but I can definitely get on this train. I don’t know where the Brad Childress arrogance comes from, but it is most certainly there.
I remember last season when it was obvious there was a little funk in the Favre-Childress relationship during a game vs. Carolina when Childress wanted to pull Favre, and Favre refused to leave a game. Then there was the bruised ego when Favre changed a play vs. Detroit, I believe, and Childress looking and sounding like a bitter child in the press conference afterward.
According to many players close to Favre, it was the Childress visit to the Favre home in Mississippi this summer that discouraged the rugged veteran from returning this season. Not at all surprising. Again, where does the Childress arrogance come from?
As a die-hard Saints fan, I also remember the quick interview leading up to the NFC Championship game when Brad Childress stated that the Vikings were going to come off the field victorious. As if he were so confident in his game plan, the Saints wouldn’t be able to compete. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate confidence–I appreciate swagger, but this is Brad Childress. The guy who couldn’t adjust an offensive scheme to keep Favre from getting abused in the 3rd and 4th quarters of an NFC Championship game. The same guy who genuinely thinks this Vikings team could be a championship contender with Tavaris Jackson or Sage Rosenfels under center.
I pity Vikings fans, because I think they know–they’ll never win the big one with Brad Childress as captain of the ship.
