Dr. Laura Drops the “N” Word (Listen!)

By James Sheldon on August 13th, 2010

In all fairness, it was as part of a call discussing race. And in all fairness, Dr. Laura is more than likely an idiot. I don’t think she always was, but c’mon–who thinks they can drop the “N” word and not stir up a “S” storm? Seriously. What the “F” was she thinking? You can pretty much say any word you want as a white person except for one, so why tempt fate? Because you’re Dr. Laura, and you think that context will trump political correctness in 2010.

Note to Dr. Laura:

NOTHING WILL TRUMP BEING PC IN 2010!!!

I’m not one who puts a lot of stock into words. If they’re well used, organized and provocative, I’m into them, regardless of how many letters they possess or what the word begins with. In direct opposition, if you run your mouth with the rhetoric of a bigot in the 1950s, it kind of goes in one ear and out the other. Regardless, words don’t offend me, but they do offend a lot of people.

Dr. Laura’s call was somewhere in between–it started as a legit conversation, and it wasn’t long before it was obvious that she wasn’t a fan of the caller, and that the caller wasn’t really a fan of Dr. Laura.

While I think she acted the fool, I definitely think a point was made–if it’s a word that shouldn’t be used, it shouldn’t be used by anyone–that’s equality, right?

Schlessinger went on to make herself sound completely out of touch, older and crustier than ever. She has since apologized for the exchange, but you can hear it right here! And of course we wanna know what you think!

This is how some of my white friends would view it as well. That's a terrible way to think about it. I understand that if black people say it, everyone else should be able to say it too...you know, the whole "equality" thing. But hey, guess what? Are blacks treated equally? Especially around the midwest? Hell no. What about Asians or Latinos? Nope. THAT'S what you don't and should never be allowed to use that word.

get used to it people!!! The N word is an american tradition. and the tradition originaly imposed by the socialy dominant race at the time has now become part of the language developed by the slave class who are today considered african americans ;). its not confusing if you dont understand a culture. be sensitive thats all. "they ask me questions like why do black people..". "I dont think thats racist....no no. as a mattter of fact...OBAMA....blah blah!! WTF Ive been asked allot of crazy stuff by my white friends. about hair...allot of times they are very annoyed by what black people Do. that IS racist...even though they probably dont even notice it, and think they are keeping it real.

She was as wrong as it comes. This woman called for advise (which really she shouldn't have) but never the less she did. "Dr. Laura" seemed defensive by her statement. I'm thinking that maybe she's guilty of the same thoughtless actions of this lady's neighbor and whoever else is saying ignorant things. Her neighbor was very racist. Why not just ask her how she likes certain things or what SHE thinks about certain things. She's not a black spokesperson. She cannot speak for all black people because we do not all think alike. Anybody who thinks different are racists or just plain ignorant...you pick what you would rather be called, but please know, they're both the one in the same. She should be taken off the air.

Hello! I am black and I understand what the caller was saying.I am also in a relationship with a none black and have had simular experiences! but I do not think its racist for someone to ask questions about black people or even make jokes. Many people dont realize their comment might be takin the wrong way. I learned not to be so serious.A serious racist comment stands out from the rest! I have to say though, dr laura was wrong when she claimed blacks constantly call themselvs nigger! yes there are some that use the term negga! including other races,I dont care for either! but strange as it sounds, nigger and nigga are very! very! different as far as how its taken.
