Johnny Carson still stands head and shoulders above anyone else who has ever hosted a late night talk show.
He is the golden standard to which all other talk shows have tried to maintain, unsuccessfully at times. And his seal of approval could make or break a host. Little is known about Carson’s personal life, and personally, I like it that way. He used to write jokes for Letterman when he was feeling bored during his retirement and made cracks about Conan O’ Brien never making it on NBC’s late-night programming block – which seemed oddly prescient, now that O’ Brien is moving to TBS.
Tapes of Johnny Carson’s shows have been circulating since he decided to pack it in 18 years ago from his 30-year run at the top of the world, but now, for the first time, 3000 yours of his television show have been uploaded onto the internet, so people of all ages across the world will be able to enjoy it, provided they have internet access.
But who knows. Maybe people will be more distracted watching Vevo videos on YouTube of Gaga and Bieber, but personally, I’d rather watch Dean Martin on Johnny Carson. On repeat. Back when people had influence, and talent. And the confluence of that was enough to make the most compelling programming in history.
You can see the new videos at Johnny’s website, johnnycarson.com.
