So You Think You Can Dance – Top 3

By James Sheldon on August 6th, 2010

Kent, Lauren, Robert.

That’ll be your finishing order as well after next week’s finale. 1. Kent Boyd 2. Lauren Froderman 3. Robert Roldan

Go ahead and take it to the bank. Adechike got the axe last night, and it was obvious that he was going to. Based on performance, no, not wholly, but it was obvious the judges wanted him gone, and for their finalists to be Kent, Lauren and Robert. The judges/producer did everything within their power to manipulate the viewers into voting that way.

What do I know about dance? A lot. Seriously, ask me anything about dance, except ballroom.

Before the show even started on Wednesday night, I made my statement that the judges would do everything in their power to mold the minds of the viewers and voters so they could see the finale that they desired. Personally, I don’t think they were very big fans of Adechike to begin with, but they were over-the-top critical of his performances, and basically said goodbye without actually using that word.

Perhaps they had some off-screen issues with Adechike. Regardless, I don’t think the entities (dancer/producer/judges) were ever on the same page.

I’m not saying the Top 3 isn’t how it should be, I’m just stating a fact that reality TV is about as real as a spray tan. And you know, this is my opinion. If I’m wrong, please, tell me.

An example? OK. That first piece Lauren was in–the tango. I don’t know that you fault her for a failed lift within the grand scheme of things, but there was most certainly a failed lift in the grand scheme of things. Not a mention of it by the judges, because to the untrained eye, it probably looked like the dude was supposed to hold her on his shoulder when he couldn’t press her above his head. Having been that guy before and missed the very same lift–I don’t think so.

Another example? OK. The second number she was in (and again, don’t get me wrong, this gal is definitely a Top 3) Nigel Lythgoe made obvious mention of a lift that was “cool” to the untrained eye (aka, the voting eye), but in honesty the lift was slow to develop and awkward–a choreographic parlor trick which wasn’t well executed.

I think fans of the show will be pleased with their Top 3 for Season 7–they have a variety of talent within the mix. You’ve got wonderful, athletic gymnasto-dancers Kent and Lauren, and the dark horse, Robert.
