Kanye West’s newest video, Power, made its debut on MTV Thursday night. It’s a video that the rapper hopes will quite literally paint a better picture of himself than the one he created at the network’s award show last year, when he interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech.
Kanye was M.I.A for a while after the incident, reportedly throwing himself into his newest album. Before the video for his first single, Power, aired last night, he tweeted, “It’s not a video… it’s a painting.” He wasn’t kidding.
The neoclassical figures in the new 90-second video do resemble “more of a live painting” than a traditional music video. It really is beautiful. Directed by artist Marco Brambilla, the new video reportedly sought Michelangelo’s famous frescoes for inspiration.
MTV’s head of music talent, Amy Doyle said, “It’s up for interpretation, like any piece of artwork. It is provocative and will keep people talking,” when asked about West’s video.
And igniting fan buzz is one thing West does best.
