Katy Perry has recorded a song that is infectious, will get caught in your brains, and is nearly identical to Kesha’s Tik-Tok. It also will cause her to get bent over the desk of sue-happy lawyers. Everyone’s a winner!
Who isn’t happy about Katy Perry’s success, other than legions of people with taste? The Beach Boy’s Brian Wilson, whose label is suing Katy Perry for appropriating the phrase ‘I wish they all could be California girls’. Seriously, Katy Perry? Seriously? You skirted around the issue of copyright by calling your song California Gurls – one step away from l337 speak in a song, and you just HAD to hire Snoop Dogg to use words echoing pop classics past.
California Gurls has sold 3 million copies and has topped the singles charts for weeks now – this is the national climate. The song is exactly the same as Tik-Tok. Almost exactly. If they were babies, they’d be retarded identical twins. The Beach Boys Rondor Music have sent Perry’s representatives demanding the song’s original writers, Mike Love and Brian Wilson be given a writing credit on the song, along with a percentage of the royalties.
I really hope Katy Perry gets shaken down, simply because she writes songs like Milk Milk Lemonade. Which is linked above.
What’s that, gentle reader? You want a sampling of the lyrics? “Milk, milk, lemonade / ‘Round the back’s where chocolate’s made.”
Seriously.
