This is a hot one.
I must admit, I’m one of those sports-media junkies who hasn’t pulled his eyes away from SportsCenter/ESPN News/First Take since I popped up at the butt-crack of 9:45 a.m.
Brett Favre is supposedly calling it quits…again. I’m not a Favre hater, in fact, I love the guy. It was brutal being a Saints fan last year, watching them beat the holy hades out of one of my favorite all time players. Yep. Brutally enjoyable.
The entire off-season has included a more candid Brett Favre than in past years, optimistically stating that he wanted to continue playing professional football, but knowing it would depend on his health and capability over his desire.
ESPN sources, quite possibly Santa Claus, or maybe Deanna Favre, have stated that Brett is done–BUT stop right there, people–neither the Vikings or Brett himself have confirmed this report. It’s mere speculation–a point of debate.
It’s obvious Brett doesn’t want to hold this squad hostage, but at that, we know he isn’t going to show up to any training camp workouts anyway, so this preliminary retirement report smells less than completely legitimate.
The concern with Favre is the ankle. The ankle that has been abused, operated on, abused again, operated on again and then beaten down in the 2009 NFC Championship game vs. the Saints. Where would Favre and the Vikings open the 2010 season? Yeah. In New Orleans. I may be the only one who thinks that Brett is considering his “streak” as part of playing throughout the season, but ultimately, I believe he’s well aware that if he takes the wrong hit early in the season, that’s that–it was pointless to come back.
I just have strong doubts about the present speculation. Unless Brett is really concerned about his starting streak, and unless his ankle is just complete finished, it would only make sense to take the next 6 weeks to rest, screw the consecutive starts streak, and get into the line up around week 3 or 4. I guess we’ll see.
