Jack Roush Plane Crash

By James Sheldon on July 28th, 2010

Jack Roush is recovering from serious, but non-life-threatening injuries after crashing his private plane during a landing yesterday in Osh Kosh, Wisconsin. Roush is the co-owner of Roush Fenway Racing, formerly Roush Racing, a team boasting several of NASCAR’s top drivers and personalities, namely Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth.

Roush was flying his small, business class, Hawker Beechcraft Premier jet to Osh Kosh for the annual AirVenture Fly-in, an event sponsored by the Experimental Aircraft Association–Roush is a longtime member. He was piloting the aircraft, and had with him a passenger, Brenda Strickland, who was also injured in the crash.

Both Roush and Strickland were able to walk away from the plane before being transported to a local hospital.

Witnesses stated that the landing approach looked to be too slow, and that the aircraft lacked stability, the wings rocking back and forth. The closer they came to touching down it seemed apparent that a safe landing was in jeopardy. At that point the aircraft stalled in what looked to be an aborted landing attempt. This caused a wing to strike the runway, followed by the entire aircraft.

At first the accident was referred to as a “rough landing,” but as you can see in the photo, the tail section of the plane broke off, so I’m pretty confident that qualifies as a crash landing. Fortunately for Roush and Strickland, no fire broke out as a result of the accident.

Roush is no stranger to aircraft accidents. In 2002 he nearly lost his life when he crashed in Alabama.
