Get ready. Get ready to be pummeled on by legions of South Koreans, as Starcraft II is about to come out.
Starcraft is one of the most popular online videogames in the world, despite being released 12 years ago. Think about it. That’s just a few years after Mario 64 was released, and people are STILL playing Starcraft, preparing themselves for Zerg rushes and constructing massive amounts of pylons. 11 million copies have been sold worldwide, the majority of which was sold in South Korea, where tournaments are organized, the best players have corporate sponsors and a degree of celebrity. Starcraft has won 37 different videogame development awards, and has a star on the walk of game. College courses have been taught about the game, and generally, it’s spawned a level of fandom unheard of for an interactive experience roughly as old as Buffy : The Vampire Slayer.
And now it’s going to have a sequel. Starcraft 2 is going to hit stores tomorrow, July 27th, to what will undoubtedly be lines stretching around the block. It’ll be the first installment of three expansion packs, which will be released later at dates to be announced.
Join me, super nerds. I’ll see you in line. I’ll be the one in the glasses, dressed as a Terran.
