I love it!!!
I love it, I love it, I love it!
I’m so tired of this antiquated crap–of this pretense and expectation. I was already a huge fan of Dez Bryant, and I love the fact that he is now refusing to “participate” in the rookie hazing that is so common within the league. I remember dealing with this crap at all levels of sport–when you’re the new guy, there are things they expect you to do. You’d like to be focused on winning, but nope, you’re busy playing go-fer.
What’s expected? Carry pads, gear, run errands for the veterans, pay for a few dinners, lunches–yep, it’s absurd.
When expected to carry the pads of fellow Cowboys Wide Receiver, Roy Williams, rookie Dez Bryant refused. He later stated:
“I’m not doing it. I feel like I was drafted to play football, not carry another player’s pads. If I was a free agent, it would still be the same thing. I just feel like I’m here to play football. I’m here to try to help win a championship, not carry someone’s pads. I’m saying that out of no disrespect to [anyone].”
Did I mention that I love this? For starters, Roy Williams has to realize that his “starting” job is as good as gone. This kid is already better than him. Yeah, I’m saying that when the kid hasn’t even played a game in the NFL, but apparently his head is already where Roy’s isn’t and should be…winning championships.
Roy’s repsonse:
“Everybody has to go through it. I had to go through it. No matter if you’re a No. 1 pick or the 7,000th pick, you’ve still got to do something when you’re a rookie. I carried pads. I paid for dinners. I paid for lunches. I did everything I was supposed to do, because I didn’t want to be that guy.”
Well, I guess Dez is going to be that guy. I have a feeling if he’s catching Tony Romo’s tosses for TDs, is blocking down field for Felix Jones, is offering a little coverage relief to Miles Austin and Jason Witten, I have a feeling they won’t care that he didn’t carry any pads.
