It is one of the most exciting events in all of sports. Everyone digs the long ball, don’t they? 8 Major League Baseball sluggers will be on display in Anaheim tonight, looking to be crowned the 2010 State Farm Home Run Derby King.
Derbies are weird from year to year–some players love the opportunity to compete as often as possible, some believe the derby screws with their swing and some (A-Rod) avoid the competition at all costs.
This year’s Derby will feature:
American League
Miguel Cabrera – Detroit Tigers
David Ortiz – Boston Red Sox
Nick Swisher – New York Yankees
Vernon Wells – Toronto Blue Jays
National League
Matt Holliday – St. Louis Cardinals
Corey Hart – Milwaukee Brewers
Hanley Ramirez – Florida Marlins
Chris Young – Arizona Diamondbacks
The derby rules will play out just as they have in recent years. During the first round of competition, each hitter will be allotted 10 outs–everything other than a home run is an out. They’ll play into a second round, then the finals.
Predictions, you ask? I always like the hottest hitters coming into the break to put on the best show. Ortiz was hot in June, but has cooled drastically in July. I’m a biased Cardinals fan, but legitimately, Matt Holliday has been on a tear as of late.
I’m headin’ down. Probably won’t catch the derby, but I will check out Fan Fest and have a look around at all the All-Star garb. Of course I’ll enter every contest that might send me to the evening’s festivities.
More than likely, I’ll be watching the 2010 Home Run Derby in the same manner as you–in HD on ESPN…maybe at ESPN Zone. Regardless, everything kicks on on Baseball Tonight, 7E/4PDT, followed by the 2010 State Farm Home Run Derby at 8E/5PDT.

Cabrera is on the Tigers, not the White Sox. And it looks like he'll be going for the triple crown this year.
