Paul the Octopus, who currently resides at an aquarium at the Sea Life Oberhausen in Oberhausen, Germany has been able to predict with 100% accuracy the outcome of each of Germany’s six matches at this year’s 2010 FIFA World Cup – including their recent loss to Spain.
I could have totally used his help for my World Cup pool! (Too bad he only predicts the outcome of Germany’s international games.)
Before each of the German team’s international football matches, Paul is presented with two identical containers, each containing a small morsel of food. Both containers are marked with a flag – one with the flag of Germany, and the other with the flag of the opposing team. Whichever box Paul opens to eat the food is interpreted as his prediction of which team will be victorious.
And Paul really knows his stuff.
The octopus began predicting football match results during UEFA Euro 2008, where 5 of his 6 predictions were correct. (He incorrectly predicted Germany to beat Spain in the final match.)
Daniel Fey, Sea Life’s Entertainment Director says, “There was something about the way [Paul] looked at our visitors when they came close to the tank. It was so unusual, so we tried to find out what his special talents were.”
According to Wikipedia, when Argentina found out that Paul had bet against them, predicting their team would lose to Germany , the octopus began receiving death threats! “There are always people who want to eat our octopus but he is not shy and we are here to protect him as well,” says his keeper, Oliver Walenciak. “He will survive.”
Next international soccer tournament, my money’s on Paul.

Hey Pauly, you´re safe for the time being, because spaniards are the people who mostly consume octopus, be it grilled, broiled, steamed, marinated and any other culinary preparations…so, enjoy life while you think about your next prediction….
