There have been books written and movies made, but nothing immerses you in the skills necessary for zombie survival, like this small gymnastics studio in St. Charles. Two nights a week about a dozen people get together to “run, jump, climb and vault up, over and around obstacles that stand in for the features of a city in the grip of a zombie infestation.” Strength and endurance training are also important parts of the program, because as we all know, zombies can be quite relentless.
No actual zombie or zombie stand-ins are used for the work out, yet the course’s creator, Rich Gatz, isn’t afraid to use a zombie threat for motivation. “A precision jump, for example,“ he says, “[that] requires participants to land in an exact location, much as they would have to do fleeing a zombie from rooftop to rooftop. You’ve got to land that for the zombies are going to get you.”
Zombie Fit’s website lists the following as “keys to surviving Z-day:”
- Be able to lift and throw heavy things
- Run fast and for long distances
- Be able to navigate obstacles and urban environments in an efficient manner
I would also suggest making your way to an island, and then blowing up any bridges or roadways leading to it. I’ve got it on good authority that zombies can’t swim.
Unfortunately for now it looks like Zombie Fit classes are only available in Chicago. Do they know something we don’t?
