Old Spice has done a fantastic job marketing lately – from hiring Eric from Tim & Eric to direct commercials and injecting humor and quirkiness that other companies have been lacking.
There has never been a work of greater genius than Old Spice’s recent bout of advertising. It can sit opposite Da Vinci’s greatest works and stare back comfortably shirtless. I’ve never been possessed to buy a product simply based off of their advertisements – in fact, it’s been the opposite. Most commercials don’t realize that they’re commercials and that we’re inundated with them yearly, and can pretty much guess their rhythm and content. Which is why Old Spice’s advertisements have been refreshing. You have to expect them to continue to be so. This may sound like a commercial for Old Spice, and that may be the point. I’m advertising their marketing department. Enjoy the swirling, spiraling meta-ness of that.
If commercials can be legendary, their commercials for Odor Blocking Body Wash and their normal Body Wash have gotten over 18 million hits on YouTube, and a contract for their star, Isaiah Mustafa to star in an NBC sitcom.
