Chad Jones New York GiantsThe New York Daily News reports that former LSU safety, and New York Giants third round draft pick, Chad Jones, is in critical condition after he lost control of his car this morning, crashing into a streetcar pole. Two passengers were also injured.

The accident took place in New Orleans around 6:15 this morning.  Jones suffered “a fractured leg and had arteries and nerves exposed.”  The paper reports that as of 10:15 AM, the athlete was undergoing surgery.

His injuries are supposedly “substantial.”

New Orleans Police said that the former college star has been charged with “careless operation of a vehicle,” and that they will be conducting toxicology examinations.

Jones signed with the New York Giants earlier this month in a deal that was thought to be worth nearly $3 million over a 4-year term.

The Giants are still in the process of gathering information, said Pat Hanlon, the team’s spokesperson.  Jones’ former coach, Les Miles, wrote the following statement on his Twitter account, “Just got news about Chad Jones’ car accident. We are praying for Chad and his family. Keep him in your prayers.”
