Suck it, Viacom. In a story that makes me nerd loins a-tingly, Viacom has lost their billion dollar, landmark suit against everyone’s favorite video site, YouTube.
And that makes happy drummer happy.
YouTube sprung up a while back, and offered a safe-haven for bad comedy acts, videos about cats, music videos for bored people to watch and a myriad of other activities that are most likely robbing companies of billions of dollars while their employees sit on the computer and watch cats suckle the air. But it’s a fun site. Despite all of the flaws that YouTube has, it’s still a good time-waster. And you can find celebratory videos like the one on top, of drummers who have shown up to incorrect gigs.
But Viacom didn’t like that sometimes their copyrighted material showed up on the site, so they tried to sue Google, the new owners of the site, for a billion dollars. They also, with the help of the tricksy internet, uploaded hundreds of their own copyrighted videos and then complained to the website that they were up, as evidence to use in court.
Unfortunately for Viacom, most of the videos were taken down in the next day. The landmark ruling is going to be appealed by Viacom, but I speak for all nerds when I say suck it. Suck it gently, roll it around, and suck it some more.
