Chile vs. Honduras 1-0: First Chile Win in 48 Years!

By Tiffany on June 16th, 2010

Chile vs. HondurasA major event happened this morning with Chile getting their first FIFA world cup win in 48 years! The last win for Chile was against Yugoslavia in the 1962 World Cup. Chile hasn’t even been in the World Cup since 1998, but today Chile deserved their place in the 2010 World Cup, as their game play was excellent throughout the game.

What we expected?

We expect that one of these teams will go off with Spain onto the second round – which one, however, is still up in the air.
Alexis Sanchez is a great player, of course with a nickname like “Boy Wonder”. He not only scored three goals in qualifying but set up as many as 32 for Chile on the way to the World Cup. I’m excited to see what he’s got for the 2010 World Cup.

On the Honduras side, we’ve got Amado Guevara, midfielder and captain. We hope his enthusiasm and experience will drive his team to the second round.

First Half

The game started with a free kick in the third minute by Chile’s Matias Fernandez that crosses over the crossbar. From the get go we see Chile is ready for a fight. Maybe too much, as Carlos Carmona gets handed a yellow card a couple of minutes later, and Fernandez gets one in the 19th minute. Either way, I really liked seeing Chile take such an aggressive stand so early on in the game.

The fun started in the 34th minute as a deflection from Honduras falls to the feet of Jean Beausejour and from there into the net. The score is Chile 1 – Honduras 0.

Second Half

The second half was not without its own excitement. Around the 60 minute mark, Alexis Sanchez runs up the middle of the field, and kicks a shot right past the Honduras goalkeeper just left of the net. A couple of minutes later, Honduras star Noel Valladares blocks a goal to make the save of the game. While Honduras has done an excellent job of defended throughout the game, their offense just wasn’t there today and Chile’s was.
