What’s a Twitter Jockey? MTV Is Searching For One

By David Woods on June 14th, 2010

One upon a time, MTV had a reality show called Wanna Be a VJ. If you remember it, guess what? You’re old.

TJs are the new VJs. Allow me to explain: MTV is searching for a new voice for their Twitter stream. The official title for the position is “Twitter jockey” and the duties for the person who wins the job will entail writing posts for MTV’s official Twitter account, polling other Twitter users to find out what’s hot in the online space and just generally serving as a liaison between the Twitter-using public and the corporate heads at MTV.

MTV already has 18 candidates for the position, so you already missed your chance to apply. These candidates will compete in online challenges this summer and a winner will be crowned during a live show on August 8th.

If this sounds stupid, keep in mind that all major companies now have official Twitter feeds and, thus, official Twitterers. Heck, the White House has a person whose job is to run the official Twitter feed (and even kind of went through a similar search).

If you think that Twitter isn’t important, just look at what’s happening with BP and the oil spill. BP failed to take charge of the issue on Twitter and it allowed a satirical (and hilarious) account to spring up and gain a top of followers. Twitter provides and immediacy that makes it a vital tool for companies, both in times of success and crisis.
