That’s right. It’s finally here. So all of you fans gnawing at your gag-balls will be relieved.
Lady Gaga and her team have been working hard at her music video for Alejandro, and it shows. The production values are through the roof. And everything might seem a little familiar if you watched music videos back when they were a way of promoting albums – as the director is Steve Klein, who directed a great many of Madonna’s music videos. You want a brief summary? Uh, yeah. Too bad for that, cause it’s more than 8 fucking minutes. Anything that long usually purports to have a plot – and this one is apparently a Nazi military dictator has ordered a gangrape on a hapless nun. According to her, this represents Gaga’s love for the gay community. ART.
See, that’s the good news. Way to go, Gaga. The bad news is, Lady Gaga has made an epic music video to a remake of an Ace of Base song. And this isn’t like, oh it sounds like an Ace of Base song, it’s pretty much a dead ringer. Complete with synthed-up reggae upstrokes. Which has always been the disparity between Gaga’s image – dumb pop songs mixed with people in fetish masks is an interesting dynamic, but it doesn’t make art.
It might’ve been even more compelling before, but that was the 80’s. Gaga’ll never be as deep as you want her to be. Enjoy nine minutes you’ll never get back. Cocaine’s a helluva drug.
