National Donut Day 2010

By James Sheldon on June 4th, 2010

Donuts, doughnuts or “Do-nots?”

It’s National Donut Day, folks. Yes, if you’ve heard the rumor, participating Krispy Kreme locations are offering a free donut in honor of the day. If you’re jonesin’ for a freebie, you might wanna call before you head over. Then again, I’ve never known a Krispy Kreme location not offer a free donut at the request of, “May I sample one of those?” Seriously. Just try it sometime in your kindest voice. See if they don’t oblige.

Regardless, let us celebrate the donut. The harbinger of gut-bustingness. These little guys come in so many options, they put the automotive industry look black and white.

You know what I love? And I’m almost a little embarrassed to admit this–those little chocolate frosted “Donettes.” They’re ever-so greasy, and perfectly chocolately. If you are a chocolaholic like myself, they’re even better with a pint of LOW-FAT chocolate milk. Yeah. Gotta be low-fat.

To the business of donuts, Krispy Kreme is apparently coming back around. It’s nice to see with the beginning of an economic turnaround, we’re able to apply our funds to the true necessities in life. Krispy Kreme announced profits in Q1, and execs are optimistic about the rest of the fiscal year. Their optimism makes me…hungry.

I don’t know who declared today National Donut Day, and honestly people, I don’t care enough to research. Not even to Google it. But I thank that person. I nod to them in confidence, and I hope you’re all able to enjoy some sweet, sweet, fatty-fried (or perhaps baked) bread, coated in sugar, rolled in melted sugar, coated in chocolate, sprinkles, artificial maple flavoring, filled with jelly, custard or KREME.

May National Donut Day live on in our hearts, throughout the entire weekend. Thanks, Donuts.

For those that think a donut couldn’t have a holiday, well screw you for trying to ruin my dream because National Donut day has been around since 1938. It honors real people (whoever that is) and the women that served donuts , coffee, pie and comfort to the American soldiers during World War I. http://scallywagandvagabond.com/2010/06/national-donut-day-get-your-free-donuts/
