Guillermo Del Toro Quits The Hobbit

By Mark Lorenz on June 1st, 2010

Filthy, tricksy Hobbitses. You wants them. You loves them. You’re eagerly awaiting their next film installment. And now you’ll never be able to see it. Gah.

The Lord Of The Rings trilogy was one of the best things to happen to cinema in the last decade. They brought mainstream and awards credibility to fantasy movies, were hugely entertaining, and managed to make Orlando Bloom look like a decent actor. Do you know how difficult that it? That’s the directing equivalent of making gold with your mind. It’s insane to think about. My head’s exploding. Literally, exploding.

Guillermo Del Toro is one of the most creative directors working today, and he’s been attached to The Hobbit project since the beginning. But because of production delays and problems with MGM being unable to secure the funding and even score a green-light for the project, which would be an obvious money-maker, he’s leaving the project. He couldn’t commit himself to living in New Zealand for six years.

Which means the movie will probably never get made. And that makes me cry a little. Who doesn’t love the Hobbit, with the dragon’s dens, and Bilbo Baggins finding the one ring and going on adventures?

Del Toro will continue to co-write the screenplay with Peter Jackson and his wife.

That's a shame but why do you feel the need to slam Orlando Bloom? There is a whole group of people who have spent a lot of money on these movies based on Orlando Bloom's involvement. He was excellent as Legolas and I couldn't imagine anyone else playing that part as well as he did.

Legolas was my favourite character. I agree with Jen Jen. He IS a decent actor.
