Lance Armstrong Twitter Statement

As Mark alluded to, Floyd Landis decided to clear his conscience and he has pointed the finger at Mr. Tour de France, Lance Armstrong.

Being a follower of Lance Armstrong on twitter, I immediately jumped on to see what kind of rebuttal he might offer, if any. Yeah, nothing. I took a peek a little later. Nothing. An eerie silence? Finally, a few minutes ago, he offered something short, and devoid of the typical Armstrong flair and a link to a statement. He stated that the transcript of his conference will be found at the Team RadioShack site.

Honestly, the guy has been accused of everything before and I’m sure this is nothing new to him. He has been tested again and again, and he has always come back clean.

Still, why would Floyd throw Lance under the bus?

He probably felt betrayed by his old teammate Lance Armstrong, who didn’t immediately side with him after he was accused of doping following his 2006 tour victory. This was the year following Armstrong’s string of 7 straight Tour de France victories. I’m sure in Floyd’s head, he was just taking the torch and offering America what was expected–the next great American cyclist. After all, it was Armstrong who recruited Landis to the U.S. Postal service team in 2005.

At the center of all of this was an ongoing investigation that resulted in discoveries that implicated Floyd Landis for more than blood doping, or the use of performance enhancing drugs. According to the French government, he was a criminal, a conspirator in a case of computer fraud to impede the progress of the investigation. Maybe you remember the warrant that was issued for his arrest earlier this year? Yep. There is one.

Then again, there’s always the chance that Floyd Landis is to cycling what Jose Canseco is to baseball–the black sheep who seems to spout some truth in coming clean. Guess we’re gonna find out.
