Did you enjoy watching giant 3D blue people fight each other on a giant screen? And I’m not talking about the upcoming adaptation of the Smurfs movie.
If you did, you might be excited at the way technology is taking shape. But if you’re like me, and think that 3D is a gimmick to get everyone to upgrade their systems and keep technology in the hands of people who can afford shooting movies in 3D, you might be less than thrilled. After all, the last twenty years have produced the greatest cinematic abortions in all of history – they wouldn’t be any better in 3D. They’d be better with good scripts and producers, but without that and with just 3D technology, they’d just be waaayyy easier to get high to. And that’s about it.
But James Cameron sees the market changing, because of his game-changer, Avatar. Part of me wishes that movie would’ve bombed as hard as my buzz did reading that script, so we wouldn’t have to deal with all the after-effects of bloviating.
While speaking to a group in South Korea, Cameron said that 3-D will replace 2-D as the standard medium for television, movies, and online content in the next 25 years. He likened the “3D renaissance” to the same progressions that brought sound and color to films.
I totally agree. Only sound and color were NECESSARY. 3D is a needless distraction that’ll just be used to put more effects in films when directors are unable to focus on story.
