Iron Man 2 Kills The Weekend

Iron Man 2 killed the weekend box-office. But you really shouldn’t be surprised. The only way that Iron Man 2 would’ve not killed the box-office is if Gwyneth Paltrow destroyed the world with her GOOP.

The movie was critic-proof. It got good reviews, but even if it didn’t, we’d still be having a conversation about how Marvel studios, despite paying their core staff of writers the grand total of seven magic beans, can now go all Scrooge McDuck and roll around in money till it’s wedged in their back-cleavage. Far, far into their back cleavage.

Iron Man grossed 133.6 million dollars in the last weekend. Which puts it at the fifth highest opening of all time – behind The Dark Knight, Spiderman 3, Twilight: New Moon, and Pirates of the Caribbean : Dead Man’s Chest. The highest opening movies of all time – unadjusted to inflation — are now all sequels to giant franchises. What did none of those films have? Mickey Rourke, laughing evilly. Which should propel any movie into the top five grossing films of my heart.

Iron Man 2 knocked down Nightmare on Elm Street : The Remake and opened first in foreign territories, which brought in another 194 million dollars overseas, bringing the worldwide total to 327 million.
