Romaine Lettuce Recall 2010

By James Sheldon on May 7th, 2010

Sonofa-what!?

Man. This is the last thing you want to read after you enjoyed a crisp, Caesar salad. The worst thing about it–the recall was issued yesterday, and I ate the salad last night. Seriously, self, turn on a TV!

This 2010 recall has to do with a Romaine crop that has been tainted with the E. Coli bacteria.

Fortunately my Romaine was from a bag. That means it has probably been sitting on a shelf for a few weeks, so I should be in the clear. Then again, there was some weird stuff going on in our household over the past 8 hours. I had a dream that I was invited to sing “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” with Bobby McFerrin at a concert, and this morning, my wife was singing the song in the bathroom. You think that’s a symptom of E. Coli poisoning?

The recall has been issued to the following states:

Alabama, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Authorities traced the funk back to the distibutor, Freshway Foods, located in Sidney, Ohio, after several individuals experiencing severe illness were admitted to hospitals in New York, Michigan and Ohio. Some with life-threatening symptoms.

The FDA is actively investigating the source, and you can have one guess as to a state of interest. No. Not Hawaii. Rather, Arizona. Poor AZ, all those Sun Devils caught in the crossfire of an illegal immigration law. If anything comes of it, I’ll be sure to let you know. In the meantime, go for some fresh butter, green or red leaf lettuce instead of the Romaine.

...farmer's market, people. Find a local farmers market and buy your weeks worth of produce (unless you live in AZ, of course). Or - cough up the extra $1-2 and buy from a noteworthy grocer touting organic.
