Joaquin Phoenix Was Just Crazy For A Mockumentary

By Mark Lorenz on May 6th, 2010

Between Joaquin Phoenix and Gary Busey, today is a day that belongs to the crazies.

You might’ve remembered a time when Joaquin was more known as an actor than someone who was in love with pulling off weird Andy Kaufman-esque publicity stunts. But those days are far behind him. For the purposes of shooting a documentary about what happens when an actor goes into a downward spiral, and whether or not the media can be held accountable for accelerating or contributing to it. You know, wanky stuff. Stuff that’d you roll your eyes at if it ever were made into a movie by people with the proper bankrolls and wherewithal.

Thankfully for those of you that enjoy watching trainwrecks, that movie WILL be made. Phoenix did a presentation of the documentary to the agents at William Morris, and are now looking for buyers of his Mockumentary. I don’t know what’s more wanky, though, pretending that you went through a meltdown and were going to release a rap album, or videotaping the whole thing to release as a commentary on modern day celebrity atrophy.

Personally, I think the whole thing wreaks of ego. Which is kinda the point.

Joaquin, I will buy your documentary for twelve dolla.

I called this from DAY ONE! The fact that he had said he wanted to take a long break post-Walk the Line. I love it! I think it serves everyone a nice tasty dish of stop believing this crap is real.
