To give you an idea of what sort of film culture we’re living in currently, here it is – the sequels to Zoolander and Anchorman have been canned.
The sequel to Kick-Ass has already been given a title. There’s been a remake of Nightmare on Elm Street, but a few of the most enjoyable comedies of recent years couldn’t find the proper funding to get the greenlight from Paramount. They’re giving money to make Monopoly – the movie, Candyland, the Magic Eight Ball movie, and are giving eight-figure payouts to screenwriters who are making movies where a main plotline is Ryan Reynolds dressing in drag.
Ben Stiller was looking to star-in and direct the next feature as he did with the first – shooting for a 2012 release date – and is having trouble securing the finances from Paramount. Similarly, Adam McKay revealed recently that he was having trouble getting the finances for a sequel to 2004’s hit, Anchorman.
This means a number of things. First, when even big-time stars are having problems securing budgets for sequels to hit movies, what chance do new writers have? Secondly, the crack that Paramount executives are smoking has to be extra cruchy. Or, something.
