Michael Flatley Shall Dance Again

By Mark Lorenz on April 23rd, 2010

Lord Twigglelegs is going to go on tour again. And kick you in the head with another dose of pounding Irish dancing. And that’s the last time you’ll see the words pounding and Irish in the same sentence.

If there’s one thing I’m a fan of in this world, it’s ridiculous shows that somehow get put on Broadway. Shows like The Pirate Queen, where women do things like sing and fight off people with swords while giving birth. Any Broadway show that features singing, birthing women, I’m a fan of. But the paragon of the ridiculous? That mantle was always assumed by Michael Flatley.

Lord of the Dance. Irish slayer of the Dragon-Banshee, or…whatever. The man who is not just a dancer, but a concert flautist. He who wears a headband without a dash of irony and brought you Riverdance and Lord of the Dance and various dance-related shows with dance in the nomenclature. That guy. The funniest part about Michael Flatley? He’s not even from Ireland. He’s from freaking Chicago. And was an amateur boxer.

Anyway, he’s returning in another round of  Lord of the Dance, reprising the role that he played in 1996. And you’re going to see it. Because everyone does. Because it’s big and ridiculous Broadway.
