The owner of Fox? The Australian? The media-mogul who looks like Emperor Palpatine? There’s no way he could possibly be racist. There’s no way in the world. </sarcasm>
Carlos Slim is a Mexican billionaire with an ironic name, because he is every bit the corpulent businessman cliché you would imagine him to be. He’s also brilliant, with a fortune rumored to surpass Bill Gates, in an excess of 58 billion dollars. 58 billion dollars. That’s the GDP of a small country, acquired primarily through controlling 80% of the cell phones in Mexico. That’s a lot of people, a lot of cell phones, and a lot of money. He’s also expressed interest in buying a soccer team and moving them to Queens. Needless to say, the man has balls.
When the Times Company announced that the were experiencing debt, Slim lent them 250 million dollars, making him the largest shareholder in the company, other than the publishing family who has owned the company for decades.
So when asked whether Carlos Slim was thinking about purchasing the company, a perfectly reasonable assumption, Rupert said, “I don’t believe the rumors of the New York Times Sale, least of all to a Mexican.”
You stay classy, Rupert Murdoch.
