I feel compelled to offer a few simple connections to ease any potential tax deadline stress. Taxes suck. Especially when you owe. Ultimately, paying taxes is something we can all empathize with…hopefully. So, here’s a little, helping Internet hand.
If you’re rushing to get your taxes in, and are screaming at yourself because you have procrastinated, you can file an extension. The IRS site offers a lot of advice for filing returns, tracking returns and all the forms you need to file an extension. This is an especially good move if you owe, and don’t have the monetary flow to pay Uncle Sam, or say, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
(Yeah, Arnie got a couple pocketfuls of my scratch this year. And I swear, my wife and I never got paid what we were owed last year! Some Disney tickets, or one of those IOU’s would have been a nice gesture, California!)
If you have always done your taxes yourself–why? Have you ever considered that a pro, and not a dime-a-dozen “accountant firm,” but a legitimate accountant, might be able to score you every possible deduction while offering audit protection for getting all the t’s crossed and i’s dotted? Maybe even get you a little something back when you thought you’d have to pay in?
Digressing, if you’re in a pinch and need to file an extension, you can do it electronically. Seriously. The same program the IRS uses for online filing, IRS e-file, will connect you to what you need in order to submit IRS Form 4868. Once you’ve completed it, you’ll get an online confirmation that you have been granted an extension for the appropriate tax year.
Best of luck. You’ve got about 36 hours to flip it around. Many United States Post Offices will stay open late to accommodate the necessary, April 15th post-marking.
