Masters Payout 2010

By James Sheldon on April 12th, 2010

A green jacket. Big freakin’ deal, right? OK, it’s a HUGE deal. But what about the other green.

What does the winner of the Masters Golf Tournament really win? Phil Mickelson already had two green jackets.

The Masters prize purse changes from year to year, and in 2010 it grew to a healthy sum of $7,500,000 to cover the prize winners. This includes the $1.35 million that will go to “Lefty” for his masterful play on Saturday and Sunday, when he put the leaders in his sights and eventually in his rear-view mirror.

In years past, Mickelson had played second-fiddle to a lot of the biggest names and trends in golf: The many flavors of the week, month or season. For the longest time, he was the victim of a bogus reputation. Many referred to him as a choke artist, or simply “the guy who couldn’t beat Tiger.” It was obvious that the media hype, and perhaps his own psyche had crept into his cortex, but after a re-tooling of mind and body, he has truly become the guy who is a threat to take every tournament.

It only seemed appropriate that Mickelson took the top prize yesterday, in the tournament that marked the return of Tiger Woods. Mickelson in a sense, is the polar opposite of Woods–the yin to Woods’ yang. So much in common, yet so little in common.

Mickelson looked absolutely untouchable on Sunday, posting a round of 5-under par, moving his impressive total to -16 for the tournament. For those who were able to enjoy his play, he simply looked like he was playing some of his best golf. Not too shabby for a fella who’ll enjoy his 40th birthday in June!
