UPS Jobs – Does Anyone Look Good in That Much Brown?

By James Sheldon on April 8th, 2010

UPS is looking to hire 25,000 new drivers over the next five years to counter impending retirements.

25,000 drivers. Twenty-five thousand. That’s a quarter or their current driving force in the United States.

Let’s rip on UPS for a moment. Anyone else experience a slip in quality from UPS over the past 5 years? Seriously. Just the past 5. I’m sure I wasn’t the only person to cleverly devise a play on the UPS slogan: What can brown screw for you? And now they’re looking to add 25,000 new drivers to the mix.

I know some great drivers, and I know some horrendous drivers. I know drivers who will hustle up the stairs to my apartment door, and I know drivers who buzz the front gate, trudge slowly up the stairs while taking a personal cellphone call, meander to my door, continue their call about taking their girlfriend to the Lakers game, never attempt to make eye contact, hand over the signing board, continue their call and walk away.

I’m not sure UPS is aware of their level of suck. Then again, maybe they are. It seems the virtual testing to become a potential hire for the position of UPS driver is as hard as nails. And yet again, perhaps every under-qualified hack who would like to make about 75k a year is flocking to the opportunity. I’m gonna go with the latter. At present, approximately 10 percent of applicants actually make it through the test, and are deemed qualified.

UPS drivers make good money but they work hard. They also make massive overtime especially during the holiday season.

The long haul drivers make the big bucks. But the dudes willing to work OT = Bank.

They aren't talking about delivery drivers only, my guess is most of them will be in the freight division pulling the doubles from terminal to terminal. And they do work in the neighborhood of 70-80 hrs a week. I know it may come as a shock to the overeducated never gotten their hands dirty office crowd that a truck driver could make $75k or more a year but they do. Most drivers make at least $50k, many more than that.
