Guam Tipping Over Video

By James Sheldon on April 2nd, 2010

Sweet mercy. After writing that post on the Guardians of the free Republics, I needed a reminder as to why I love our government as-is.

Because I’m a fan of Congressman Hank Johnson, I have to come to his defense. Clearly the guy doesn’t think the island nation of Guam will tip over. And clearly, Commander Robert Willard knew exactly what Johnson meant. Or did he? Regardless, the congressman issued this statement after taking more than a few personal and Internet jabs that likened him to a 6 year-old.

“I was using a metaphor to say that with the addition of 8,000 Marines and their dependents — an additional 80,000 people during peak construction to the port on the tiny island with a population of 180,000 — could be a tipping point which would adversely affect the island’s fragile ecosystem and overburden its already overstressed infrastructure.”

But then again, what if it did tip over? A flipping of the mattress, if you will. I think it’s time we admit that LOST has opened our eyes, hearts and minds to all kinds of possibilities for islands. I wonder what would happen if the entire population left the island of Guam, and released it of the weight it currently bears. It might just float away like a weather-balloon.
