Yesterday Nintendo announced their development of a new 3D-enabled system, tentatively titled the “3DS”, whose nomenclature follows Nintendo’s current DS handheld line. More information is expected to be revealed at this year’s E3 entertainment expo, to be held June 15-17 in Los Angeles.
Given its inclusion of the DS naming convention, one would reasonably assume the new system to be a handheld device. Can 3D really shine on something so small it fits in your palm? It’s clear that “Avatar” really opened the way for the new 3D boom, and I believe the Avatar video game is in 3D as well, but the third dimension is something that really needs to be seen on a big screen to be fully appreciated.
The other issue I see cropping up is that while the new system will be backward-compatible with existing DS titles, the experience wouldn’t be complete without a 3D-style interface. What’s the point of having graphics float around right in front of your face if you can’t just interact with them using your hands? At the same time, do you really wanna be the only one on the bus pawing and swiping at something only you can see? I don’t know; this sort of bandwagoneering is getting out of hand. What’s next, 3D novels? “Dude, I was totally absorbed into the story … literally!” Hey, you know what makes an awesome 3D game? Football. Baseball. Soccer. Pretty much anything you actually do with your body. Sex! Sex is a great 3D game, except for the part where you lose. There’s no such thing as a save game for sex.
