Behold, The Power Of Chat Roulette!

By Akela Talamasca on March 16th, 2010

If you’ve been sticking to your YouPorn channels exclusively, you might have missed out on the Chat Roulette phenomenon. The premise is, essentially, Russian roulette via online-enabled video conferencing (which seems appropriate, given both the danger of connecting with people you don’t know and the fact that the website’s developer is Andrey Ternovskiy, a 17-year-old high school student in Moscow). Logging in at the Chat Roulette website allows the user to randomly connect with another Chat Roulette user, sight unseen. That’s the fun of it, apparently. Xenophobes unwelcome.

For the most part, people seem to enjoy the service, with a few expected instances of random and unexpected horrible nudity. But rarely does such a service in its infancy give rise to the kind of hidden joy presented by this user. Clad in a zipped-up green hoodie, “Merton” plays his piano and extemporizes lyrics based on the person with whom he’s chatting. And he’s not bad! Most people of both genders seem to enjoy it, and it’s nice to watch jaded and bored faces crack smiles when they hear Merton sing about them in real time.

There’s something kinda Jonathan Coulton-esque about Merton’s performance, and that’s a good thing. I could watch this all day, and I probably will. You can check out the “PianoChatImprov” channel on YouTube for more of Merton’s stylings, and for a personal show, go check out Chat Roulette and maybe you’ll run across him someday! If not him, then hopefully a masturbating puppet. You know, something classy.
