I had this very idea once. Announced recently at the Game Developers Conference, Battlestar Galactica Online is a thing that is happening. Partnering with NBC, Universal Cable Productions, and the Syfy network, online games portal Bigpoint is going to offer this as a space combat MMO, somewhat in the vein of the recently-released Star Trek Online.
This is interesting news, especially given the choice of Bigpoint as the developer. Looking at their site shows a great number of online games, but games that I’d consider somewhat light fare, featuring none of the depth of something like World of Warcraft, for example. They’re more akin to casual MMOs, where you are sharing the online space, but the interaction is a good deal less involved.
Also, despite the appeal of Caprica, is there really a large enough audience for this universe anymore? You’ll notice that in my referenced article, I just said I was watching the final season; I didn’t say I liked it. Would an MMO do enough to cleanse the gaming palate, making it okay to revisit that universe? There is no current launch date for this project, no screens, no news other than the intention to build this game. These things founder and sink mid-project all the time; could it happen to something with enough big names behind it like NBC and Syfy? Maybe the Cylons do have a plan, but does Bigpoint?
