The 8 Most Awkward Moments at the 2010 Oscars

By Chris Stout on March 8th, 2010

1. George Clooney in the Front Row

Clooney wasn’t feeling it all night. He was probably pissed when he found out about his front row seating assignment. With Penelope Cruz in distractingly close staring distance, Clooney had to play things extra-Clooney. That meant sitting for standing ovations, looking sour for four straight hours and whipping out fake Clooney smiles right before you know you’re going to lose.

2. Costume Designer Chick Sandy Powell

She pretty much said, “I already got two of these, and I make my own clothes. This is for all the people who don’t suck. And I’m out.”

3. Big Woman, Short Film

When the winners were announced for Best Documentary Short, Roger Ross Williams raced to the stage. As he eagerly started his speech, Williams was blindsided by a flash of purple. Elinor Burkett, who also won the award, used her strong bubby vibe to push Williams aside, dominate the mic and close things out.

4. Ben Stiller’s Avatar Getup

Looking less thrilled with each passing moment, Ben Stiller presented the best makeup award in full Avatar. After an awkward-at-best exchange with James Cameron, Stiller grew tired of his avatar tail movement. He yanked a fishing rod from whoever was in charge of making his tail flop and quickly wrapped up his bit.

5. Sean Penn Presents

Hey guys, I just put my drink down next to the backstage ashtray so I could present the Best Actress award to… wait, who? Sandra Bullock? You gotta be shitting me.

6. Sandra Bullock

She couldn’t believe it either! Decent, humble speech. You just had to love the look of shock on her face.

7. Text Dolphin to 44144

When The Cove won for Best Documentary, Louis Psihoyos got rolling with the thanking. Before he could yield time to the guy who came up with the idea, another joker in the group held up a “Text Dolphin to 44144″ sign. Cue the music. Sorry guy who came up with the idea. Your big moment was sabotaged by a charitable stunt and the bad guy from Hackers.

8. Best Picture: The Hurt Locker

Nominations – 9

Awards – 6

The look on James Cameron’s face – priceless
