Best Director 2010 – Kathryn Bigelow

The Best Director of 2010:

Kathryn Bigelow.

Talk about sticking it to the man. Not only did she become the first woman in the history of the Oscars to take the crown of Best Director, but she beat her ex-husband in doing so. OK. So, they’re totally cool with one another, and completely supportive of the other’s career. It was obvious that James Cameron was thrilled when she won the award.

Back to Bigelow. She opted to take a great risk in shooting “The Hurt Locker,” letting multiple cameras roll on hours of B-roll. I like to keep repeating, “She went all ‘Apocalypse’ while on location.” Is there a better way to shoot a film about war, when stuff is happening everywhere, all the time? What a headache, what a revelation, what a way to break ground for women who make movies–to shoot a war flick, and bring the thunder on an epic level.

Congratulations, Kathryn Bigelow! Congrats for breaking through for women in film, and congrats for making a wonderful picture!

I really liked this movie. I hope people don't think she won just because a female director was due.
