We are a nation of stoners and perpetual adolescents. And it is an awesome, awesome thing. Alice in Wonderland has crushed box office records.
Tim Burton, despite all his flaws as a filmmaker, knows how to make a visually compelling film. He knows how to make eye-popping gothic designs poppy and accessible and easily sold at Hot Topic. In fact, Hot Topic was running specials for weeks, dealing with the film. They could’ve very easily called in Hot Topic in Wonderland. Or Alice in Hot Topic.
It grossed 116.3 million dollars over the weekend, putting Johnny Depp squarely as one of the top earners of all time for Disney. It also charts as the highest 3D debut and non-sequal debut of all time. The top three biggest opening Disney-related weekends now belong to Depp, with Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man’s Chest at number one, and Pirates: At World’s End at number three.
Basically, Johnny Depp has an incredible track record for being a money-printing machine, provided you pair him with adolescent-baiting films and not gritty crime dramas like Public Enemies. Although I haven’t had an opportunity to see it this weekend, I heard it was great until the third act, at which point you should be dropping blotter anyway.
Alice in Wonderland is playing in theaters now.
