GM, meet Toyota. Toyota, GM. In the wake of multiple Toyota recalls that have, and haven’t quite fixed all of Toyota’s ongoing issues, General Motors has announced an official recall for over 1.3 million automobiles, for a power steering issue.
Talk about the proverbial kick to the nuts. GM, already struggling, took a monster hit during the most recent financial crisis, had to cut one of its best attributes, Pontiac, while simultaneously being beaten senseless by brands like Toyota. Then, Toyota fumbled! A sign from the automotive heavens–a gift from the ghosts of the American Industrialists. GM picked up the ball, and ran with it–interest and sales sharply increased in January and February of 2010, and — FUMMMBLLLEEE!
So, how bad is it? The 1.3 million car recall includes the 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5, 2005-2006 Pontiac Pursuit sold in Canada, and the export to Mexico, 2005-2006 G4.
I simply can’t buy this recall-fever as mere coincidence. These issues in the multiple Toyota models, and with the GM models are issues that should have been easy to discover during product, and quality assurance testing. Please. Someone from the automotive industry tell me I’m wrong. Tell me “what” and “why” in the scheme of cause, and the complaints will end. Unfortunately, it seems to me that some of the world’s top automakers have adopted a “better to ask forgiveness than permission” policy.
Is anyone else tempted to zero balance on their 21st Century lemon, and find a sweet AMC AMX Javelin?
