Hold off … Ooooooooooh! A theatergasm.
Neil Patrick Harris is one of the few young television icons we have in contemporary showbiz. And, not only is he a part of one of the best sitcomes making the rounds on TV, but he can also sing and dance quite well — and has done so in the 1997 production of Rent, which he won a Drama League Award for. And now he’s going to direct a production of Rent at the Hollywood Bowl.
Wait, there’s a league called the Drama League? How come nobody’s written a movie about that?? Nobody’s searching for the rights for the Drama League? That’s a terrible superhero movie waiting to happen.
Rent is a musical that has been held in high esteem in the culture since it premiered in the mid-’90s. Personally, I find it kinda annoying, but since NPH’s sketch on SNL showed that he can not only turn a completely crappy show into good comedy, but has an innate love for Broadway, I’d be interested in seeing whatever it is that he wants to put out into the world. If Neil Patrick Harris directed the Diary of Anne Frank, I would be in the front row, cheering on opening night. Hopefully not during the inopportune parts, but you can’t ask too much of me.
