That…..that sentence is probably the best thing I could’ve possibly typed this year. Scratch that. This decade. There’s been a real, actual push to make Admiral Ackbar the mascot of the University of Mississippi.
I’ll repeat that — Admiral Ackbar, the leader of the Rebel Alliance, the giant fishy man at the end of Return of the Jedi who yells out the internet meme popularized amongst people talking about transsexuals (IT’S A TRAP!!), is being seriously considered as the mascot for one of universities where desegregation first took root. There’s something completely weird and modern about that.
Admiral Ackbar belongs to the Mon Calamari species, a fish-like alien who resembles squids. And live on the planet Mon Calamari, a living breathing testament as to how lazy George Lucas got at naming things. The planet was later ravaged by World Devastators, a situation you can play out on the N64’s Rogue Squadron. What was the point of me telling you all this? I’m a huge nerd. That’s the point of me telling you all this.
And so is the student body at Ole Miss, who are actively pushing for the school’s mascot to be changed to Admiral Ackbar. Ole Miss are already known as the Rebels, so the push has included a change to the Rebel Alliance.
Oh, god, life is hilarious.
