Welcome to Shutter Island

“It’s a mental hospital….for the CRIMINALLY INSANE!”

So begins the trailer for Martin Scorsese’s new thriller “Shutter Island,” based on the Dennis Lahane novel about two Federal Marshalls (Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Rufalo) who visit said mental hospital, located on an Alcatraz-like prison island in order to investigate a murder and find, you guessed it, that all is not as it seems.

Shutter Island is now playing in theaters, and there is little doubt that fans of Scorsese, DiCaprio, and perhaps even Lahane, will come flocking to theaters to see it. Should you? Well, there won’t be any gangsters, but there will be plenty of psychological tension, twists and turns, and of course, a classic DiCaprio accent.

Throw in performances by the incomparable Jackie Earle Haley and the understated but gifted Mark Rufalo, not to mention Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley, and you seem to have the makings of a hell of a movie. Unfortunately, film adaptations tend to be disappointing, and this type of psychological thriller seems to be something of new ground for Scorsese.

If you’re looking for an Oscar winner or a perfectly faithful adaptation of Lehane, you’ll probably be disappointed. However, if you come in looking for a good time on the weekend, with some fun, tense moments and the occasional over-the-top melodrama, there’s a good chance that Shutter Island will do the trick. Plus, you’ll want to have the proper background information so that you can fully appreciate the upcoming sequel, “Shutter Island 2: Shutterfellas.”
